Sanba Shinmei (Tondo) Festival (Jan)

The purpose of the Sanba Shinmei Festival is to bid farewell to and see off the deities who came to visit during the New Year's holiday as they return to the heavens. What makes this festival special is the use of a handcrafted decoration, made of straw and bamboo and known as a “tondo.” Men and boys carry the “tondo” on their shoulders and, after dancing to musical accompaniment, throw it, along with other New Year's decorations, in the fire, as an offering for good health and a bountiful harvest. This festival was designated as an Intangible Folklore Cultural Property by the City of Onomichi. It is held on January 15th at the Sanba Elementary school.
