Obachan's Garden (2001)

"Obachan" is Japanese for grandmother. Asayo Murakami, was 25 when she set sail for Canada in 1925 to marry a man she had never met. Now 103 years old, she tells her grand daughter (film director Linda Ohama) that she has kept a secret from her family in Canada for nine decades; she has a family back in Onomichi from a previous marriage which she has never told anyone about. Linda investigates her secret and her traumatic past. Her lifestory touches on the Tokyo earthquake, Japanese internment camps during the Second World War and the bombing of Asayo's home town Hiroshima.

Director Linda Ohama now spends a few months each year living in Onomichi City and travelling throught Japan to lecture in Universities.
