Onomichi Museum of Setoda History and Folklore
建物は江戸末期の豪商「三原屋」堀内調右衛門氏が建てた土蔵で、当主の堀内日出夫氏の寄贈を受けたものです。瀬戸田港は、室町時代の後期になると、小早川 氏(三原)の外港という性格を持ち、20隻の千石船を含む「生口船」を構成し相当の勢力を持っていました。江戸期において、大船の建造は禁止されました が、120余隻の船があり、内海航路の重要な地位を占め、特産の塩などの輸送にあたりました。
At the end of the Muromachi era (1392-1573), the port of Setoda was home to the 20 huge vessels which Kobayakawa, a rich trader, used in his dealings. As the Edo period (1600-1867) saw the banning of the construction of all ships of significant size, the trading routes of the Seto inland sea became essential, notably for the commerce of salt, a specialty of Setoda at the time. By the end of the Edo era, the Horiuchi, a rich merchant family based in Mihara, built the two-story storehouse which is now used as the Onomichi Museum of Setoda History and Folklore.
