The History of Onomichi City
- Onomichi was founded in 1898 but its first port opened in 1168 and today its population stands at about 150,000 people as a result of rezoning, in which the area of Mitsugi and the nearby islands of Mukaishima, Innoshima and Ikuchijima were incorporated into it.
- During the Edo Period (1603-1868), the city flourished as a trading port and many merchants became very wealthy. Many poets, writers, artists and other craftsmen were drawn to the city during this time creating an artistc name for the city which endures to this day. Many temples and shrines were also built with this wealth, and today it is well known in Japan as a "city of temples".
