西郷四郎の像 - Saigou Shirou (Judo Master)
Shiro Saigo was born in 1866 in Aizu, Wakamatsu. He is best known for his participation in the 1886 Tokyo Metropolitan Police Judo versus Jujutsu tournament held to determine which martial art was superior. Saigo perfectly executed his trademark Yama Arashi after fifteen minutes, causing his opponent to retire with concussion. He died in Onomichi in Hiroshima prefecture in December 1922. A film was made of this story by legendary director Akira Kurosawa in 1943 called "Sugata Sanshiro".
