文学のこみち - Path of Literature

尾道には多くの作家や俳人が訪れています。独特の町並みや綺麗な景色をとらえた作品は石碑に刻まれ、この”文学のこみち”を歩くとまるで俳人になったような気持ちにさせてくれます。林芙美子、松尾芭蕉、志賀直哉たちがそうです。石碑は25個ありその全てから詩や俳句を読む事ができます。地図と25個の石碑の写真がありますので是非ご覧下さい。

Onomichi is well known throughout Japan for the numerous writers and poets who were inspired by the city's beautiful scenery and quiet lifestyle, and the Path of Literature is a silent reminder of this.  They include Hayashi Fumiko, Matsuo Bashou and Shiga Naoya to name a few. The walking Path has 25 stone monuments dotted around it on which have been inscribed some part of the famous authors' works. #1  徳冨 蘇峯 - Tokutomi Soho

He was the elder brother of Roka Tokutomi. He went to Tokyo and published “Kokumin Shinbun”.

#3  正岡 子規 - Masaoka Shiki

He was the leader of the revolution of haiku and published a magazine about haiku called “Hototogisu”.

#4  物外 - Motsugai

He was a priest at Saihoji temple and a man of literary and military accomplishment. He was famous for
being called Genkotsu Osho, “Genkotsu” meaning a “fist” and “Osho” a Buddhist priest.

#5  十返舎 一九 - Jippensha Ikku

He was the writer of the famous novel “Tokaidochu Hizakurige” which has two popular heroes, Yaijirobe
and Kitahachi.

#6  金田一 京助 - Kindaichi Kyosuke

He was born in Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture in 1882.  He was an eminent Japanese linguist. He is
chiefly known for his dictations of yukar, or sagas of the Ainu people.

#7  江見 水蔭 - Emi Suiin

A novelist and a journalist born in Okayama Prefecture in 1869. He died in 1939. He is considered a
piller of Japanese literature in the Meiji era.

#8  志賀 直哉 - Shiga Naoya

He lived in a house from 1912 on Mt Senkoji in Onomichi City which still remains today. He began
writing a novel called “Anyakoro” which he completed in 1937.

#9  林 芙美子 - Hayashi Fumiko 

She moved to Onomichi in 1916 where she studied at Tsuchido Elementary school and Higashi high
school before moving to Tokyo. She published “Horoki” in 1929 which brought her fame. The calligraphy
on this rock was prepared by Masao Kobayashi who was her teacher in elementary school.

He was from Bicchu Ashimori and was a well known doctor for the Edo government.

#11  河東 碧梧桐 - Iwaya Sazanami

He was a writer of children’s fairy tales and contributed a lot to literature in Japan.

#12   山口 玄洞 - Yamaguchi Gendo

Born in Onomichi City, he went to Osaka and became very successful in business but over his life made
many contributions to his hometown.

#13  山口 誓子 - Yamaguchi Seishi

Seishi was precocious and started to write haiku when he was only 12. In 1922 he entered Tokyo
University and revived the University haiku club. Seishi became one of the most innovative haiku
writers in Japan.

#14  柳原 白蓮 - Yanagihara Byakuren

She was a well known female poet from Tokyo.

#15  河東 碧梧桐 - Kawahigashi Kekigoto

He was known as one of the two finest disciples of Shiki Masaoka, a very prestigious poet.

#16  竹田・竹下・伯秀 -
Chikuden - Chikka - Hakushu

Men from Oita Prefecture. They climbed Mt Senkoji and enjoyed viewing plums flowers and pomegranate
flowers they found in a vase. They placed the vase in the shade of a rock, drank sake and wrote a poem.
The poem is carved on the same rock.

#17  松尾 芭蕉 - Basho Matsuo

In October 1972, this monument was installed when Onomichi poets celebrated the 100th anniversary of
Basho, the famous Haiku poet.

#18  中村 憲吉 - Nakamura Kenkichi

He was from Futami-gun in Hiroshima Prefecture and was a poet of the Araragi sect. He died at 46 years
of age in 1934.

Who it was created by and when it was created is not known, but this is another song which has been
sung continually in Onomichi City.

#20  吉井 勇 - Yoshii Isamu

When he was 51 years old, he attempted a pilgrimage to Shikoku and Chugoku districts to write poems.

This song which has been sung since the old times, tells us about the port of Onomichi.

#22  小杉 放庵 - Hoan Kosugi

He was an artist born in Nikko. His real name was Kunitaro.

#23  菅 茶山 - Kan Chazan

He was from Kannabe. He opened a private school which became famous throughout Japan. Sanyou Rai
studied there.

#24  陣幕 久五郎 - Jinmaku Kyugoro

This song which has been sung since the old times, tells us about the port of Onomichi.

#25  頼 山陽 -  Sanyou Rai

Sanyou Rai had many friends in Onomichi so was often in the city. He composed this poem on Mt Senkoji
in the 12th year of  Bunsei.
